Todays selection of posts highlight the work of our new Guest Artist Season made to launch our new store 'The Land of Odds' in Glasgow. You can see the designs in our store section, or of course in store. The only other place you can get your hands on these short quanitity cool-art-cotton is with our good friends at Analogue on Victoria Street, Edinburgh.

Now, let me tell you about Ivor Williams. A graduate of Glasgow School of Art, Ivor is a part of our LuckyMe collective and he has worked for the cream of London design studios with spells at both Browns and Graphic Thought Facility. He is now living in East London with a finger still in the pond up in Scotland. He is concentrating on a series of exhibitions and self initiated projects these days - but his care and craft in print design has garnered him a certain reputation within the sphere of print design for fine artists. These shots are from his Andy Warhol exhibition invite for the Gagosian Gallery.-

* 18.03.09 - Guest Artist Profile - Adam Rodgers Remote Location

Adam Goodhand

Adam Goodhand aka DJ Goodhand is down with the super-crew they called Numbers. His flyer designs have changed the face of Glasgow's electronic music scene even though he now resides in London making a successful career with his own studio. The aptly named Remote Location have gone from relative isolation in Glasgow to being one of the main web design companies working in electronic music. They have to date redesigned Warp Records website and continue to handle web design duties on the majority of Warp's emerging roster. As gifted at motion design as he is in print, Adam has flair for the bold and colourful - a style so different to my usual photographic treatment - he just makes me consistently jealous. He's a pal as well of course, so we asked him to be on board this season.

Check out the work of remote location here.

Gemma Brown

When Gemma Brown wasn't teaching Print & Textiles at Ediburgh College of Art show was probably with me at the old Oddities store on Victoria Street. She is another annoyingly talented illustrator who studied at Edinburgh and the Royal College. Her work, despite being 100 % computer generated has a very tactile and hand illustrated quality which evokes 1950's advertising, 1970's wallpapers and 1720's Japanese landscapes. That's her on the right btw.

I AM FIST

Ben Fist makes a zine of his friends work called VVOLFTITS. You can only get your hands on it if you're really lucky. He's a really unpretencious dude so I can't go off on one here, but his work consists of bold and very dark not-quite diagramatic line art illustration of muscle and sinew. But the whole effect comes over more zombie than we just made it sound. Skulls eat brains and severed hands punch faces in the world of fist. We wanted his shirt for us to be as ugly as possible so he split a face down the middle. Sweet.

More skulls here in this still from Konx Om Pax forthcoming video promo for DFA Records' Capracara. Konx' aka Tom Schofield was the year below me at art school and ran some cool clubs before realising his full potential as an indulgent animator. But Tom's work is always going to be influenced by music and so he tends to garner attention in the field of music promo's for the coolest labels. Again, he's kinda family at LuckyMe and when we saw his amazing portrait of Kubrick in coloured pencil we knew we had to have it for a shirt. Thanks Tom. Oh, and check out his video work for Jamie Liddell on the right.

I met Zixiao through the guys at Firecracker Records at their Upstart parties where she spent the night silently drawing a night club canvas. Getting to know her has been an education in classical asian illustration and print. Her work has been an inspiration to us this season across many of our styles so simply watch this space to see more of her beautifully detailed work.

Ema J Cloak X Dagger

Another friend for years here. We are clearly victim to a touch of nepatism. Listen, we are nice inclusive people here. Feel free to mail us and get involved, but right now, let me tell you why we chose the work of Ema J.

Ema is an illustrator, designer and producer who works for the newly formed Cloak X Dagger label putting out doses of quality contemporary uk Hip Hop and Electronics. She is pretty much the blog queen in these parts who has upped us on so many new groups and artists we knew we had to get her involved. Her Neneh Cherry print is a tribute to Vixy for years of their mutual love of the Buffalo Stance. Yuss.

Tommy Perman

Tommy is the main man behind the Surface Pressure label and a driving force in the Fence Collective affiliated band, Found. Fusing Post Rock with ample handlfuls of Folk and Electonica Found have a duel identity as an artist collective working in print and exhibition design. I was recently invied to a talk on their audio sculpture work to date and it's mindblowing what these guys are doing. The shot above and the videos presented here are sneak previews of a really incredible project Found Electronics have been working on called Cybraphon - a new interpretation of a robot band that plays music and responds to its own criticism and audience. She is still in progress, but I'm sure you will hear more about the work this Summer when Tommy takes her for a walk around town and I get involved with some music for this beast.

In the meantime, check out our guest artist season here and see all these guys work.

sam is hot

So, After 12 years, we’ve closed our store on Victoria Street, Edinburgh. It is a real shame but the longer we hold onto the space the less time we dedicate to the label. At this moment in time we really want to concentrate on where we want to go and not sweat it on our home turf. Wayyyy back in '96 we brought the best streetwear labels to Edinburgh and our legacy is strong up here. But it's time to move onward and upward. So now you can buy our styles direct online, or in exclusive accounts in our favourite boutiques, or in... wait for it... Our new concept store in Glasgow's West End, 'The Land of Odds' is open now at 1106-1108 Argyle Street, Finnieston, Glasgow. Come see us. Thurs - Sat / 2pm-8pm.

With the End of an Era I have some shout outs:

I have made so many beautiful friends, gained such loyal and loving customers and just want to take this oportunity to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your love & support. It’s been funshine all the way. * 05.02.09 - Strike Me!

strike me

I spent the first two weeks of 2009 studying Kung Fu from Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit on the beautiful island of Penang in Western Malaysia, and afterwards I travelled to meet my friends who had left early for the Southern Thai islands. We spent a couple days there but we weren't really in the mood for the mid 90's Danny Boyle flavour of today's Thailand so we headed for some better times in Laos. We arrived in the beautiful capital of Vientien late on a Thursday night and wanted to celebrate by sinking a handful of sweet Beer Laos. Problem is everything in Laos shuts super early, leaving only this one bowling alley open with license. So the whole city congregates here for 10x10 pins and cheap beer. You might recognise our former shop star Innes on the right with a pretty ridiculous score of 155. It wasn't the prettiest spot but it was banging out the T Pain album and had some amazing drawings on the walls.

* 15.12.08 - Susology & LuckyMe Create Feature

susology

A few months back we were asked to make an expansive cross media project to be documented in Susology Magazines second issue ( available free over the next month in all the best Boutiques and Record Stores). Our brief was beautifully open: Explore the personal narratives of Glasgow in relation to LuckyMe.

We chose an outcome that included all the aspects of our collective - graphic design, typography, print, sculpture, photography, video and of course music. First we honed in on 4 locations in fair Glasgow that were influential to the formation of LuckyMe way back when no one had heard of us, and we printed our motto - The Gloss, The Golden, The Hum & The Laser across large manilla boxes to set them in the spaces. We then photographed the 4 scenes and assigned a local band that influenced us to each image. Next, four producers remixed songs by the local groups (Great Escape, Isoceles, 7VWWVW and American Men) with the respective motto influencing their music.

We are so honoured to have been selected for this artwork. If you see the magazine, Susology issue 2, pick it up. It's a map of sorts which helps to explain the buzz of Art, Music and bubbling sub-culture in Glasgow right now. You can pick up the remixes for free download here.

* 11.11.08 - Soundscapes at the Montreal Biennale 2009

Montreal Biennale

In May 2009 Montréal is holding its biennale of contemporary art bringing together the fields of visual arts, architecture, graphic design, music, video and cinema. A few days ago I was asked to take part in a remix project called SOUNDSCAPES.

It all started with a painting from Montreal artist Rick Leong. Dancing Serpent in Dawn’s Quiet was a part of Leong's MFA thesis at Concordia University, and was bought by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and added to its permanent collection. They subsequently commissioned Montreal pianist/composer David Ryshpan to orchestrate an original piece of music based on the painting, which was recorded on May 15th 2008 at McGill University. From this piece of music they are looking to generate as many remixes and reinterpretations as possible over the next year, making the original recording, all of it’s individual tracks, and even the sheet music available for the general public to download and work with from http://www.biennalemontreal.org/soundscapes

Well because I got a nice heads up direct from Montréal I got to work on it pretty fast. Surprisingly, I really love the painting and something about working from a visual suits me. It's not a final mix and the Biennale is a long time away but I thought I would let you hear the work in progress. So, here you go - Dancing Serpent in Dawn's Quiet, remixed by Dom Sum, The Blessings, LuckyMe.

21 maroons

I got back from my tour with Hudson Mohawke, Rustie & Mike Slott yesterday. We went to Montreal, Los Angeles, San Francisco & New York. It was ridiculously good fun. We had no idea who was listening out there and it was great to meet people face to face. Well as you hopefully have put together now I'm also part of the team here at Oddities and I thought I'd share some love to the fashion label 21MC who gave our NY show a notable mention on their website. If you haven't seen the label before please get familiar. There is something refreshingly authentic about their use of african textile prints and burned out colour palette. I hope they creep over to Europe soon.

deux three featuring mike slott and muhsinah

Dropping in the next few weeks is a limited 7" on All City Records featuring two new songs by Mike Slott. The flip features the vocal talents of soul singer / producer Muhsinah who is one of our favourites round here. She's touring as part of Common's band at the moment which keeps her busy. I was honoured to make the artwork once again by scanning and adapting thirty individual woodcuttings from a 1950's deck of tarrot cards I found in my Grandmother's shed. Catch this rare little record before it's gone. Available in all the usual hot spots, including itunes for those who hate physical possession.

party

Mornin. So we have relaunched our website for our new season of Fall / Winter 08. The current design is paired down for the moment so we are taking all website orders over paypal and email. It's easier and more secure for you this way but we will be adding full shop capability soon.

Our new styles are in store at the studio and the place is looking good. Ashleigh Arrel from Vice still has her selected Vintage Store upstairs and downstairs is about to get a new look in the next few weeks. The festival has left Edinburgh for another year and we're all loving the silence of the street. It lets us catch a breathe and get our heads into the next thing.

Selected stills from the original Zatoichi film series. We should really credit Lindsay Todd from Firecracker Records for taking all the time to find these amazing films and hooking us up. I've been falling asleep to a different epic every night for the last month.

LuckyMe

LuckyMe are putting on a weekend of shows in Glasgow over the 12th & 13th of September to celebrate a year of our Ballers 5ocial Club parties. As special guests we have Andrew Meza from BTS Radio in L.A, The Platinum Pied Pipers from Detroit, Michigan, London beatmaker Lukid and some exclusive new sets from me and my main homeboy FineArt as The Blessings, Rustie has some new music to demo, and we just got an exclusive listen to the new work of Hudson Mohawke and it's absolutely crazy.

So come see us at the Glasgow School of Art on September 12th with Platinum Pied Pipers, Andrew Meza BTS, Hud Mo & The Blessings. Then come to the basement of The Ivy the following night for Lukid, Rustie & Eclair Fifi. It's gonna be great. Trust me.
